Meryl Streep Win Best Actress Oscar 2012 - Meryl Streep has become the most successful actress of modern times after winning her third Oscar for her role as former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Her two other Oscars were for Kramer vs Kramer in 1979 and Sophie’s Choice in 1982.
In a tough category that was hard to call right up until the last minute, Streep beat Viola Davis, Michelle Williams (“My Week With Marilyn”), Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs”) and Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) for the trophy.
In a touching and humble speech, the 62-year-old thanked her husband and said: “When I heard my name I had this feeling I could hear half of America going ‘Oh no’.”
After receiving a standing ovation, she thanked her colleagues and friends for all their support, adding: “I know I’ll never be up here again.”
Streep has received critical acclaim for her transformation into Baroness Thatcher, which she achieved by locking herself away to study the politician’s speeches and mannerisms.
This dedication to her craft is something audiences have come to expect from the star and is what has led to her receiving a record 17 Academy Award nominations and 26 Golden Globe nominations winning eight, more nominations than any other actor in the history of either award.
